What sorcery is this?

2024

What sorcery is this? is a two part article commissioned by Current Obsessions for their Urban Mythology narrative trajectory.

Published online, the text explores the ways that designers Maxime Buono, SORCERER and Joanne Burke use mythology as a powerful tool for engaging with contemporary narratives.

Excerpt part 1:

"Amidst the growing uncertainty of our times and a world that often feels disenchanting, there exists a captivating refuge—the timeless realms of mythology. It is here that designers find solace and inspiration, drawing from ancient tales of myth and magic to navigate the complexities of contemporary culture."

Excerpt part 2:

"Central to mythology is the archetype of the hero—a symbol of resilience and courage in the face of adversity. In today’s world, where environmental crises and social upheaval loom large, embracing our inner hero through myth becomes not just an act of escapism but also a powerful tool for navigating uncertainty.

Given this transformative power of mythology, the act of adorning ourselves with jewellery ingrained with mythic symbols becomes an intriguing act of self-discovery through embodied storytelling."
